Sam Benjamin is a first-time author whose memoir, Confessions of an Ivy League Pornographer, was a great book in search of a marketing strategy and a publishing deal. M+C helped Sam craft a comprehensive marketing and publicity plan, focused on two phases: a digital-only rollout of the book and awareness campaign and a followup paperback phase. Initially, the book was conceived of as a product to be consumed two ways: for Amazon’s Kindle devices, and as a high-resolution PDF, read digitally. Sensing a market trend towards all things consumed digitally and spread virally, we worked to create a network of outlets from which Sam could self-promote his book, and supported his own self-promotion with traditional PR to key media in key demographic areas.
Design
Working with the brilliant design firm Grid, LLC, our team assembled a suite of digital and print materials that gave the project an identity – the artwork that comprised the book begat the overall design of the website and all supporting materials.
PR and Social Media
Given the project’s focus on a digital product and the market trend toward social media, M+C devised a PR strategy that was heavy on the author personally telling his story. Going to market with a theme of “elbow grease and determination”, M+C helped Sam integrate his blog, video blog, Twitter feed and Facebook profile to attract and entertain readers. The message Sam continues to tell is a personal one – of an Ivy League-educated kid turned pornographer, now telling his story in print. Through a series of Facebook quizzes and Twitter connections, Sam attracted purchasers, and booked speaking gigs at literary events.
